For mothers undergoing the IVF/ICSI process, the period after an embryo transfer is the most suspenseful and exciting time. Many choose to lie completely still in bed without getting up at all, believing it will prevent the embryo from falling out and help it implant better. In reality, modern medical practice shows that staying confined to bed for a long time does not increase the success rate of pregnancy and can actually cause more harm than good.
Obstetricians and reproductive medicine specialists all agree that you can walk and resume light daily activities as normal after an embryo transfer, for several important reasons:
- Normally, the uterine walls are naturally pressed together. The embryo is extremely tiny and has a natural sticky coating for attachment. Walking, standing, or turning over cannot cause the embryo to slip out as many fear.
- Medical research has found that prolonged bed rest can reduce blood circulation around the pelvic region and decrease blood flow to the uterus, which may negatively impact the embryo implantation process.
- Forcing yourself to lie completely still in bed 24 hours a day can cause stress, anxiety, and over-focusing on various bodily symptoms, and stress hormones are not beneficial to the body.
What You Should and Should Not Do After Embryo Transfer
What you can and should do:
- Take light walks around the house or short strolls to improve blood circulation, relax muscles, and reduce stress.
- Perform light daily routines, such as light household chores, working from a computer (Work from Home), or stretching.
- Get enough rest, maintain regular sleeping habits, eat nutritious food, and keep your mind at ease.
What you must strictly avoid:
- Do not lift heavy objects or engage in strenuous exercise. Avoid running, jumping, heavy yoga, or lifting items weighing over 3 to 5 kilograms.
- Avoid body massages and abdominal massages. As mentioned in previous articles, all types of massages can stimulate blood circulation or uterine contractions and must be strictly avoided.
- Avoid high heat, such as soaking in hot baths, using saunas, or steam rooms, because high temperatures can affect body temperature and the embryo.
- Temporarily abstain from sexual intercourse until pregnancy test results are certain and you receive clearance from your doctor.

After an embryo transfer, there is no need to stay bedridden around the clock. Mothers can get up, walk, move around, and live a normal, comfortable, and gentle daily life—just taking care not to overexert yourselves or cause impact to the abdominal area, ensuring your body remains relaxed to create the best possible environment for your little one to implant.
