Following childbirth, a time often celebrated as a joyful period for many families, some mothers instead face feelings of sadness and exhaustion, despite feeling they should be happy like other mothers. These symptoms are warning signs of Postpartum Depression (PPD), a serious issue that should not be overlooked and requires proper care to prevent negative impacts on the family.

Postpartum mood disorders can be divided into three levels based on the severity of the symptoms:
Baby Blues: This is very common, affecting 70-80% of new mothers. It usually starts within the first 2-3 days after delivery and resolves on its own within 1-2 weeks.
Causes: Hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, stress, or worries about the baby.
Symptoms: Easy fatigue, irritability, anxiety, mood swings, and easy crying.
Postpartum Depression (PPD): Found in approximately 10-15% of new mothers. Symptoms usually begin within one month after delivery and can last longer if left untreated. This condition may require consultation with a doctor and medication.
Symptoms: Persistent sadness, lack of energy, loss of interest in life, sleep disturbances, feelings of guilt or belief that they are not a good mother, or feeling no emotional bond with the baby.
Postpartum Psychosis (PPP): This is a severe and rare condition. It usually occurs within 48-72 hours after delivery and requires immediate treatment.
Symptoms: Hallucinations (hearing voices or seeing things), violent behavior, confused speech, and a high risk of harming oneself or the baby.
🩺 Treatment for Postpartum Depression
Talk therapy with a psychologist: This helps the mother express her feelings and find solutions, and is suitable for those with mild or early-stage symptoms.
Husband or relatives should listen, share the burden of childcare, and offer encouragement.
Get enough rest, eat nutritious food, do light exercise, and avoid mood-altering substances.
Talk with other mothers facing similar problems.
Those with moderate to severe symptoms may need to consult a doctor and use medication as part of the treatment.
The sooner Postpartum Depression is treated, the higher the chances of recovery. If you or someone close to you shows signs of PPD, do not hesitate to seek advice from a doctor or mental health professional.
