Semen analysis is one of the most important and accurate methods for checking male fertility. This test evaluates how many sperm are present, how well they move, and whether they have a normal shape—all of which are essential factors for IVF/ICSI.

What does semen analysis examine?
Volume (amount of semen)
Normal: 1.5 – 6.0 ml.
If too low, it may result in a reduced sperm count or insufficient amount for fertilization.Sperm Concentration
Normal: ≥15 million/ml.
Below this level = low sperm count (Oligozoospermia).Motility (movement of sperm)
Normal: ≥40% motile (including progressive and non-progressive).
If sperm move slowly or not at all, the risk of infertility is high.Morphology (sperm shape)
Normal: ≥4% normal forms (WHO criteria).
Abnormal shapes (e.g., misshapen head, short or bent tail) reduce the chance of fertilization.pH (acidity/alkalinity)
Normal: 7.2 – 8.0.
Too low or too high may indicate infection or inflammation.Viscosity (thickness of semen)
If semen is too thick or clumpy, it can affect sperm motility.Liquefaction time
Normal: within 60 minutes.
Longer than this may suggest abnormality.White blood cells in semen
High levels may indicate infection or inflammation in the reproductive system.
Why do semen analysis before IVF/ICSI?
Identify causes of male infertility
Assess readiness before IVF/ICSI
Diagnose diseases or abnormalities in the reproductive system
Monitor treatment results for infertility or post-surgery
How to prepare for semen analysis?
Abstain from ejaculation for 2–7 days before the test
Avoid alcohol and smoking for 2–3 days prior
Get adequate rest
Semen analysis is a simple but highly important step in evaluating male fertility—especially for those planning to have children or undergoing IVF/ICSI. If abnormalities are found, there are still various treatment methods and assisted reproductive technologies that can improve the chances of success.
