PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic-Ovarian Syndrome) is the new official medical term for PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). Recently, in May 2026, a global consensus of 56 health organizations and experts, including the leading medical journal The Lancet, approved this name change from PCOS to PMOS.
Why change from PCOS to PMOS?
- The old name was a misnomer: The term “Polycystic Ovary” implies having multiple cysts on the ovaries. However, many women with this condition do not actually have ovarian cysts. What appears on an ultrasound are not cysts, but rather small, underdeveloped follicles (immature eggs). This misleading terminology often led to delayed diagnoses for patients.
- It is a metabolic issue, not just an ovarian one: The new name incorporates “Metabolic” and “Polyendocrine” (affecting multiple endocrine glands) to reflect that this is a systemic, whole-body disorder. Its primary root cause is insulin resistance, which impacts blood sugar levels, fat storage, blood pressure, and cardiovascular health—extending far beyond reproductive health or infertility.
Summary of the Terminology Shift
- PCOS (Old Name): Focused narrowly on “cysts” and “ovaries,” which was too restrictive.
- PMOS (New Name): Accurately captures the broader reality of the condition as an endocrine and metabolic syndrome that manifests in the ovaries.
