What is? AMH, Anti-TPO, Anti-TG?

This is a case of a 41 years old patient with an AMH level of 0.79 ng/ml and elevated Anti-TPO and Anti-TG levels. Today, we will explore the significance and implications of these findings in detail.

AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)

What is it? AMH is a hormone produced by the developing follicles in a woman’s ovaries. It serves as a marker of ovarian reserve, indicating the quantity of eggs remaining in the ovaries.

Why is it important? AMH levels can help:

  • Assess fertility potential: Higher AMH levels typically indicate a larger ovarian reserve, while lower levels suggest a diminished reserve.

  • Guiding fertility treatment: Doctors use AMH levels, along with other factors, to plan fertility treatments.

  • Estimate the risk of premature ovarian failure: Consistently low AMH levels, especially in younger women, can signal a higher risk of early menopause.

What do AMH levels mean?

  • High AMH: Often found in younger women with a large ovarian reserve.

  • Normal AMH: Common in most reproductive-age women.

  • Low AMH: More common in older women or those experiencing fertility challenges.

Anti-TPO (Anti-Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody) and Anti-TG (Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibody)

What are they? These are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that target to destroy specific protine from the thyroid gland (thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin).

How do they affect fertility?

  • Thyroid dysfunction: Elevated levels of Anti-TPO and Anti-TG can lead to thyroid disorders, which can disrupt the normal functioning of hormones involved in menstruation, ovulation, and pregnancy.

  • Irregular menstrual cycles: Thyroid disorders can cause irregular or absent periods, reducing fertility.

  • Ovulation problems: Imbalances in thyroid hormones can interfere with ovarian function, leading to irregular or absent ovulation.

  • Increased risk of miscarriage: Pregnancy complications, including miscarriage, are more common in women with untreated thyroid disorders.
